Want a bit more from the day? Then join our full day kayak tour. We depart at 11am and we will have you back in town by 5pm. Just pack a lunch and join the fun. This is the classic tour for the San Juan Islands. Launching from the beautiful Westside of the San Juan Island, we head down the Lime Kiln Lighthouse. The Lime Kiln State Park is a well know as the best place in the world to see killer whales in the wild. So we are in a prime area for killer whale encounters. But do not get hung up on killer whales. There is tons to see out there. From Bald Eagles to Harbor Seals, not to mention the beauty of the scenic vistas of the Olympic Mountains and Vancouver Island.
Looking for a bit more mellow? Then book a Sunset Tour. With an evening departure you will see the sun set from your kayak. This is really a special tour. With the low light cast across the water and the warm tones of the shoreline cast by the sun. Not much more I can really say about this tour. Beautiful and no crowds!
If none of the above fills your adventure needs. Hop on a multiday kayak tour. We camp from kayaks and we are completely self supported. We pack all the food and gear and take off for 2, 3, or even 5 days of kayaking. Your guide will take care of all the cooking. We supply your tents and all other camping gear. This is really an amazing tour. But they book fast so give us a call soon.

There is always something wonderful to see. During the winter we have a host of amazing sea birds that visit the San Juan Islands. The is a great opportunity to do some birding from kayak and you never know what you might see. Bald Eagles are common along the shoreline as well. They can been seen coasting along the shoreline in search of food or perched in the top of a tall fir tree.
Harbor seals are always about. They are common to the San Juan Islands no matter what time of year you visit. But the Stellar Sealions not here all year and the winter is the best time to see them. Young males come to the San Juan Islands every winter to feed in the rich waters. They hope to put on enough mass over the winters to compete for breeding territory in the spring.
Everyone wants to know about seeing killer whales (Orca). The winter months are not the best months for seeing the Orcas. But that does not mean you will not see them. With the Souther Resident Orcas making occasional passes though the Straits. Transient Orcas pass by as well. Other baleen whales can also be seen moving along the water near San Juan Island.
More than anything it can be a wonderful time on the water. Without the congestions of summer traffic on the water you can assured a more peaceful time.
The weather can be bit more unpredictable this time of year some we do have to cancel a trip from time to time. We only cancel if the winds are strong and personal safety becomes an issue. But be sure to be ready for cool air and rain. It is true that San Juan Island can be sunny and beautiful in the winter months but we get are share of Pacific Northwest rain. So be prepared.
So get in touch with us if you are interested in doing a bit of kayaking this winter. We are always happy to get people on the water, No Mater What Time Of Year.

Getting Ready for Kayak Tours for 2009
It is hard to wait for the 2009 kayak tour season to really kick off here on San Juan Island. The weather has been so nice it is crazy. Though we have been running a few winter tours and I was on the water yesterday teaching lessons. It just seems not enough folks come up in the winter to take advantage of such good weather and water conditions we have been having. I keep looking at the forecast and thinking some of the Seattle kayaker weekenders might start showing up early. So far we have not been seeing much. The other day I was on the West Side of San Juan Island to catch one amazing sunet and had the opportunity to sea Dall’s Porpoise, River Otter, Bald Eagles and Stellar Sea Lions. That was from just sitting around in one place on the shore. It was pretty nice. The yesterday I was on the water to teach lessons and the water conditions was so calm it was great for do intro kayaking lessons. Plus with the sun high in the sky, we were really warm. After classes I visited the south end of the island to catch view of fox and various raptors flying around. Then at the end of the day I hired a new Guide for the 2009 season. It looks like he is going to be another great addition to the Discovery Sea Kayak Guide Team. So all in all it has been great out here. If you live in the region and would like to come out to San Juan Island and join a Kayak Tour. Get in touch with us. We are ready and set to get people on the water to enjoy this wonderful time of year.
